- Comments about the work
- Schattierungen was written for me by Miklós Maros while he was living in Berlinon a DAAD fellowship in 1980. The German title hints that this is a matter ofgradual transformations of one and the same element. In a series ofcompositions for different solo instruments, Maros seems to summarise theessential natures and possibilities of the different instruments. For the cello hehas here made use of chords which are broken, forming various arpeggiosthroughout the composition. In certain sections these variations actuallyengender melodic fragments. Schattierungen consists of our movements playedwithout a break. The first movement is built round a guitar-like play, while thesecond emanates from an expressive introduction. The third is a pizzicato ofgathering intensity, in which both pitch and pizzicatos are performed using bothhands. The fourth movement explores its way, via harmonics, to spherical state.Text: Peter Schuback. From Phono Suecia nr 45 (1990)
