Background
- Comments about the work
- has borrowed its title from the art world. A or medal is a small relief image, something between a drawing and a sculpture. My intention was to draw and sculpt in this mini format something that cannot be produced with other instruments. It was composed for alto saxophone and trombone, two instruments with a very distinct sound. They are excellent for using large horizontal lines since they can play expressively and are wide in scope; even in the first bar the saxophone plays a figure that spans two and a half octaves. This exclamatory figure serves as a motto for the entire piece. Using slightly less common playing techniques, it’s also possible to play harmonies by combining rapid movements and trills with song and play in the trombone part. This allows the instruments to play a chorale-like passage, with the high notes of the saxophone trills providing the melodic line. The ensuing rapid section is dominated by short notes where the saxophone’s pizz (or slap-tongue) and staccato are imitated by a muted trombone (or half muted, or another technique). The piece culminates in a section comprising quick, nimble figures with arpeggios in both the instruments, and a recapitulation of all preceding sections in abbreviated form. The whole work is melodically and harmonically based on a triad structure, in which dual hexads (two by two triads) are placed in opposition, functionally speaking, as they have no notes in common. Each is at once attracted to and repelled by the other, the functions resembling the functional structure of classical harmonics. Medaglia was written for and is dedicated to Jörgen Pettersson and Ivo Nilsson. It is approximately eight minutes in duration.Miklós MarosEng. translation: Neil Betteridge
